Being ‘Salt’ in NZ’s media industry

It was a joy to host our final Salt event of the year in November, welcoming 68 Christians working in media for a day of talks and fellowship.

We invited Hana Seddon (Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāti Pūkenga, Ngāi te Rangi, Te Rarawa ) from the Salvation Army, broadcaster Julia Bloore and our own Rev Frank Ritchie to speak at the event, and the trio each brought their own salient reflections and encouragements to those working in the industry. Topics included our redemptive hopes and responsibilities as Christians in light of te Tiriti o Waitangi, how to integrate our faith and vocation, and how to stay the course when life (and work) is challenging.

Another highlight was hearing from Charene Siakimotu, Tom Day and Olivia Shivas about what it means to work in broadcasting and be a follower of Christ.

We awarded three scholarships to young Christians studying to work in the industry, as well as handing out a share of a specially donated $10,000 fund to 17 media professionals wanting to upskill.

All this was interspersed with plenty of great food and conversation, and we’ve had some brilliant feedback. We’re already getting our thinking caps on for our next event!
