Reaching a Large New Audience

CBA has been instrumental in the birth of a brand new programme broadcasting weekly on a secular radio station.

The programme has opened up a new weekly audience of more than 5,000 regular listeners, further expanding our mission to communicate the heart of the Christian faith in mainstream media.

CBA has partnered with Māori station Radio Waatea and the Anglican Māori Diocese of Te Pīhopatanga o Te Tai Tokerau to launch ‘Karakia Rātapu’. “We are delighted by this opportunity as weekly shows are a massive commitment from radio stations,” says CBA Senior Producer Josh Couch.

‘Karakia Rātapu’ (Sunday Service/Liturgy) is a half-hour liturgical church service predominantly in te reo Māori which airs every Sunday morning from 9am – and is also available online in podcast form.

The programme, which was officially launched in May, features a karakia (worship service) including waiata (songs) in both te reo Māori and English and a brief kauwhau (sermon) prepared with a non-believing audience in mind.

Key voices involved are the Ven Dr Lyndon Drake, and Māori Evangelists Keri-Ann Hokianga and the Rev’d Howard Karaka.

Lyndon Drake is the Archdeacon of Auckland (and Chair of the Venn Foundation). The idea for the show came after he noticed many of his congregation had been isolated from their services due to the first COVID-19 lockdown.

Josh Couch oversaw the initial production of the programme – with the first few programmes recorded in the CBA offices in Penrose.

“We’ve come alongside them with the radio production expertise needed to bring the programme to life. It’s a delight to see a new regular show sharing the heart of the Christian faith with a new audience, and a privilege to have been a part of making it a reality,” Josh says.

“We are really excited to be partnering with a new station and supporting the local church to continue to share the Good News during these changing times.” ‘Karakia Rātapu’ airs on Radio Waatea 603AM (in Auckland) Sundays from 9am and is available at podcast.karakia.nz.
